A Figure in Contrapposto pose

This is the soldiers and sailors monument on the college green of Athens campus. The full monument consists of four bronze statues. One is on top of the pillar and cannot be seen in this image. The statues consist of a Union artillery man on top of the pillar. As well as a Union sailor, soldier, and cavalryman around the pillar. The cavalryman is the one shown in this image in a contrapposto pose.

An example of the contrapposto pose that we have covered in class would be the "Warrior" statue discovered in Riace, Italy. The statue would have been made around 450 BCE which would have been during the Greek early classical period. This statue was believed to be made using the, "lost wax cast method" which would have been a very time consuming and labor intensive method to create this extremely detailed piece of art. The signature of the contrapposto pose being the heavy lean on one foot leading to the bending of the knee on the other leg.
