A Portrait

 A Portrait

The Early Roman Empire held power from 27 BCE to 96 CE. Octavian assumed power in 44 CE and was given the title of "Augustus". Much of the art during this time period was based on political propaganda. During this time period portraits became a popular style of art.

An example of a portrait is the Portrait of a Married Couple (pictured below). This was a wall painting from Pompeii in the mid first century CE. Homeowners often would put portraits like this on walls in their homes. It was normal for individuals to be holding objects in these paintings. Holding certain objects symbolizes literacy, education and intelligence. Sometimes clothes would be rented for these portraits. In this portrait specifically it is only assumed that they couple is married and the women in the painting may represent ideal beauty during this time period.

The picture that I have taken at the top of the page is a more abstract portrait of possible Marilyn Monroe. I found this example of a portrait in Seigfred Hall which houses the School of Art and Design. Even today it is common to have family portraits in your household just the in ancient Rome.
